Exhaust gas heat exchangers (exhaust gas heat exchangers) are devices specially designed for the exhaust gases on a heat carrier. The heat is transferred with a tube bundle. The exhaust gas can thereby be guided through the tubes of a straight tube bundle or also in the shell around the tubes. The decision for one or the other variant ultimately depends on an optimal flow guide and thus a good heat transfer, the possibility of cleaning the apparatus and a low pressure loss.

With regard to the other components in an exhaust pipe, such as silencers and catalytic converters, the total pressure loss according to the data sheet of the engine manufacturer must not be exceeded. Significantly lowering the permissible pressure loss, on the other hand, leads to a significant increase in engine efficiency and can be the goal of optimum plant design. This is because the higher motor efficiency is offset by the increased heating surface requirement and thus the higher costs of the exhaust gas heat exchanger.

A tube bundle heat exchanger can be designed in a variety of ways and can be designed to meet the special requirements as an exhaust gas heat exchanger. Water is used as a heat carrier, either as hot water or as steam, and various heat transfer oils (thermal oil / thermal oil) are used to make the exhaust gas heat of the engine usable for various application processes.
